Jeremy's Story

Jeremy was a keen cyclist before and illness made cycling a two-wheeled bicycle impossible. Through the Wheels4Me scheme, he was able to explore tricycle options and get back to doing what he loves.

This is his story:

'When i received the bike I was able to leave the house, send time with my family we could go to my son’s sports activities, as a family so it’s given me freedom, independence and we’ve reconnected as a family.

Cycling was my passion; mountain biking, road-biking... I would cycle 150km a week into work. So when i got a critical illness which effected my lower limbs, I was concerned I might bever cycle again but thinking it may be achievable for me.

When I was lying in the hospital bed I was looking at pictures of different types of bike and what I may or may not be able to use going forward so for me to have access to the loan scheme and then go out and buy my own bike, it’s transformed my life; its given me freedom; its given me independence and helped me reconnect with my family.

It meant I no longer had to rely on taxis going to medical appointments; it meant i could take my son to school in the mornings and help my wife with those types of tasks.

I feel confident on the bicycle. I can travel further; I can travel faster than in my wheelchair for example and I think its easier than taking public transport which would involve train journeys, changes onto buses...it would take longer, it would be complicated and it would cost me money.

The Wheels4Me scheme is easy to apply for. You fill in an online form, i think there is some communication between yourself and the provider of the bikes but they deliver it via a van, they teach you how to use it, they provide you with everything you need: bike, locks,

insurance so all you need to do is try and use the bike as much as possible and see if it is something you can use as a mobility aid.
